HOW TO CHOOSE AND LOAD A FORKLIFT SAFELY

Genie GTH844 Telehandler

Safe loading is critical to overall forklift safety because improperly loaded loads can transfer the center of gravity into the danger zone simply by being loaded. Here are four ideas to help you load the lift truck safely.

  • Never exceed the load capacity. You risk tipping your machine if you move a heavier weight that exceeds the rated capacity on the data plate.
  • Place the heaviest weights closest to the forklift mast: Just as you would draw a big thing close to your body to carry it, so should a forklift.
  • Reduce the space between the front wheels and the load center. The center of gravity moves less when a weight is closer to the front wheels and axle.
  • Reduce the load-center distance. Whatever you can do to decrease this distance will benefit the steadiness of your forklift.

Choosing the Right Forklift

There are several distinct varieties of forklifts, each of which is best suited to a certain purpose. Some are small and agile, excellent at moving smaller loads rapidly in confined locations such as a warehouse, whilst others are built for sluggish, heavy lifting. Here are four suggestions for selecting a forklift:

  • Consider how much weight you’ll be lifting. If you need to lift a lot of weight, you’ll require a forklift with a large load maximum weight; otherwise, choose smaller, more agile ones.
  • Examine the site’s conditions and terrain. If you have a forklift that can handle tight spaces, loose ground, or uneven terrain, you need one.
  • Determine whether you require any more attachments for the assignment. Certain projects may necessitate certain attachments, so consider which you’ll require before making your selection.
  • Check that your forklift is the correct size for the job. Before you rent or buy a forklift, you need know how large it can fit on your job site.
