What Is the Purpose of a Scissor Lift?

Skyjack Scissor Lift

Cross balance supports are used to move scissor lifts up and down. The mechanism used to move the lift up and down is determined by how it is driven. Scissor lifts can be driven by hydraulics, diesel, or electricity, to name a few options. Scissor lifts are often employed for a number of purposes ranging from completing building repairs to accessing products kept high in warehouses. We all know what they are and what they do, but how does a scissor lift work?

The way a scissor lift works depend on its power source, but the resulting movement is the same. Here are the steps to how a scissor lift works:

  • The power source is activated, and the cylinder(s) are filled with hydraulic fluid or compressed air.
  • Pushing hydraulic fluid or compressed air from one location to another.
  • The cylinder is pushed outward, causing the legs to separate.
  • The platform has been elevated.

When the operator wishes to lower the scissor lift, they will reverse the aforementioned process and begin the descent by releasing the pressure or fluid in the scissor lift. The pace at which it falls is determined by the power of the scissor lift and the weight of the platform. If you anticipate lifting hefty objects, a more powerful scissor lift might be considered. Heavyweight, for example, makes it harder for the engine to force liquid or air against.

How are Scissor Lifts Powered?

There are several different types of scissor lifts accessible to you, with the main difference being their power source. The following are the many ways scissor lifts are powered.

  • The lifting mechanism of hydraulic scissor lifts is powered by a hydraulic liquid in the cylinders. They’re simple to operate, and operators normally don’t require much training. These are best suited to small jobs where speed and horsepower are not essential.
  • Pneumatic scissor lifts operate by using air pressure to raise and lower the scissor lift. They don’t produce byproducts or fumes, making them a more environmentally friendly alternative at the expense of less power. These are excellent choices for modest projects and indoor use.
  • Diesel scissor lifts run on diesel fuel. They’re extremely strong, can handle greater weight, and have a broader platform. Due to the produced fumes and loud noise, they are best employed for outdoor locations or spaces with ventilation.
  • Electric scissor lifts are driven by a quiet mechanism. They are silent, do not release fumes, and are often smaller in size than more powerful scissor lifts. They are ideal for usage in small places.
