Which Excavator Size Is Right For You?

Excavator Rentals

Diving projects require a lot of time-consuming equipment selection, particularly since it is so important to get the right equipment for the job. Once you have decided to use an excavator, you must still choose the right size. You won’t be able to finish the job properly if you choose a tool that’s too small or doesn’t have the right functionality. You may be less productive and exceed budget if you choose one that is too large. Where do you start when choosing an excavator size?

Excavators come in many different sizes. They can be classified as mini, midi, standard, or large excavators. Knowing your options can help you pick the right excavator size.

  • Mini or Compact Excavator – Compact excavators can weight up to 6 tons. They are the smallest excavators and are ideal for tight spaces. A mini excavator is excellent for indoor projects, sewer repairs, water line installation, and other jobs where large equipment isn’t needed.
  • Mid-Size Excavators – Typically weigh 6-10 tons, are ideal for those with limited space but need a bit more reach and power than a mini excavator can provide. In spite of their smaller size, Midis can also be used for standard projects like construction and landscaping.
  • Standard Excavator – An excavator of this size is typically capable of lifting between 10 tons and 45 tons. Standard excavators, sometimes called crawler excavators, comprise the majority of excavators. Crawlers typically range in size from 19 to 24 tons, with most of them found in the commercial construction industry. Standard excavators not only have more power and reach, but also have hydraulic systems that can handle a variety of tools.
  • Large Excavator – Construction and demolition projects that require large amounts of power and capacity require excavators that weigh 45 tons or more. Despite their tremendous power, large excavators come with major drawbacks, including the need to transport and store them in oversized trucks and trailers.

Your excavator size should be determined by evaluating the key aspects of your project. The following are the main factors to consider when choosing an excavator:

  • You should choose an excavator whose reach will enable it to dig to the depth your project requires.
  • A large excavator can lift bigger and heavier materials.
  • The cost of larger excavators is higher, but choosing a piece of equipment that’s too small can be a costly mistake if you aren’t able to complete your excavation.
  • Think about how tight the space around your worksite is and if there are any permanent fixtures.
  • Ensure your chosen machine has a counterweight matching the weight of your lift requirement.
  • The size of an excavator is primarily determined by its overall size, but the bucket must also fit the objects you plan on lifting.

Although evaluating these factors can provide a reasonably accurate picture of your project’s needs, working with a professional in person is the best way to make sure you choose the right machine. Different excavators also have different cab sizes and styles, so the only way to know for sure what size you prefer is to test it out for yourself.
