Grinder
Grinders use horizontally rotating discs to level, smooth or clean the top surface of a concrete slab. Grinders come with a multi-accessory disc that can be loaded with long lasting Dyma-Serts, Strip-Serts, grinding stones or star wheels to remove rough finishes, flatten uneven areas or clean concrete slabs of sealers, paints or mastics. Primarily designed to work the top surface of a floor over large areas, grinders can also be used effectively to level uneven joints or high spots of 1/16" to 1/8" where small areas are the only concern. Grinders provide contractors a smoother finish than scarifiers or scabblers.

Scarifier
Scarifying machines apply a cutting wheel to the concrete surface, by the way of a cutting drum that flails the surface, leaving a clean, textured or roughened finish. Scarifiers are also referred to as planers, milling machines, rotary cutters or simply surface-preparation machines. Scarifiers allow you to control the various styles of interchangeable cutter assemblies, that can be used for cleaning, grinding and light or heavy milling . Production rates range from 350 to 1,500 square feet per hour (dependant on machine size and horsepower for a 1/8" removal depth of 3,500 PSI concrete.

Scabbler
Scabblers use compressed air to hammer piston-mounted bits into the concrete surface. They tend to roughen the concrete surface more than grinding or scarifying. Scabblers can remove up to 1/4" of concrete surface in a single pass. The actual production rate depends on the strength of the concrete. A typical removal rate for a machine with a 12" working width is 200 to 250 square feet per hour at 1/8" depth.
